One of the problem with owning cats is that they constantly shed fur. Sometimes, various health issues can cause them to shed more hair than normal. Serious underlying conditions can cause this hair loss which is known as alopecia. You need to be concerned if you notice abnormal amounts of hair loss. Pruritic and non-pruritic are the two main categories of feline hair loss. Itchy skin is a symptom of pruritic hair loss, so cats often start biting, chewing, and licking themselves. The affected area is usually painful but not itchy with non-pruritic hair loss.

Allergic reactions are usually responsible for pruritic hair loss. Felines have them in much the same way people do. Insect or flea bites can cause dematitis. This condition will prompt your cat to scratch and bite himself a lot. Insect problems can be prevented by periodic medication from a vet. On the other hand, the allergy may be attributable to other reasons such as changing your kitty’s food or exposure to dust, pollen, and other irritants.

Felines can also be affected by a fungus that causes ringworm. If you don’t spot ringworm early, your cat can easily begin to lose its hair. If your pet does indeed have ringworm, you’ll be able to see circular lesions in the areas where the hair falls out. Your vet will need to give your cat anti-fungal cream to help get rid of ringworm. If you don’t get your cat treatment, then the condition won’t go away on its on for about three months.

Other causes for feline hair loss include stress, dry skin, an abscess, a traumatic surgery or injury, Cushing’s disease, and hyperthyroidism. Some cats are prone to feline symmetrical alopecia because of their hormones. This may become a problem after neutering or spaying. It usually can be treated with hormone injections. If you aren’t exactly sure what the problem is, it’s best not to try to treat the condition on your own. It’s vital that you take your cat to the vet so he can treat it appropriately.
