Water damage to foundations and cellars can be prevented by correctly functioning guttering systems. There are plastic gutters, aluminium gutters, copper gutters and cast iron gutters and choosing between them is not always easy. To varying degrees, these different materials offer their own benefits including affordability, durability or attractiveness. But aluminium guttering comes out on top time and time again.

Conscientious designers and homeowners are increasingly inclined to go with aluminium gutters. The fact that they cost a great deal less than others and not much more than PVC is behind this shift. The savings that can be made on purchasing aluminium rather than other materials are furthered by it’s cheap installation.

Ease of installation is one of aluminium guttering’s biggest advantages: no soldering is required and the gutters are lightweight so capable DIYers have no need to employ a professional. Also, aluminium gutters require practically no maintenance. They won’t rust like cast iron gutters and require only the same cleaning as any other gutter to avoid leaf build up.

Most ordinary gutters require periodical maintenance to fix leaks which frequently appear on seams and joints. This isn’t a problem with aluminium gutters. There are no seams or joints since gutters are made from a single malleable tube bent into the required shape.

Such easy and infrequent maintenance is part of the reason behind aluminium guttering’s other major advantage: durability. On average aluminium guttering will last three times as long as plastic which is likely to need replacing after only ten years. This is why aluminium gutters represent such good value for money.

Ultimately, attractiveness plays a role in the decision too. Some homeowners may prefer one colour of guttering over another. Plastics and iron are incredibly difficult to paint whereas aluminium gutters are produced in a variety of colours and can be painted easily should this be necessary. Although they are produced in a variety of colours, aluminium gutters are easily painted, unlike other materials. Paint on aluminium will last much longer than paint on cast iron, which peels quickly.
