If you’re exchanging wedding vows, the odds are good that you believe this is YOUR happily ever after.. No one goes into marriage with thoughts that it won’t work out in the end. Many people feel completely blindsided when the first signs of trouble loom over the horizon for their marriages. The good news is that you can have the marriage you’ve dreamed of. It can start today. You just need to learn how to set goals for your marriage just as you do for the other areas of your life.
We all know how important it is to set goals. This one act motivates, prods, and convinces us to take action to accomplish the things we want out of life. Yet very few people take the time or have the inclination to set goals in their relationships. Even if they do take the time out of their lives to create marriage goals, the goals are vague and unspecific.
Your marriage is one of the most important relationships you’ll have in life. Yet most couples spend more time planning their weddings than they devote to planning their marriages in the (hopefully) many years to come. Good marriages require more than work to make them strong enough to stand the tests of time. They require proper planning. Goal setting is an important part of the planning process.
Now that you know why it’s so important to create goals for a strong and healthy marriage it’s time to turn your attention to the types of goals that will have the greatest impact on your marriage. Here are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind as you create those goals for your marriage.
Identify and Address Specific Problem Areas
Different marriages will have different sticking points. Common problem areas in marriage include: money management, communication, conflict resolution, lack of time together, parenting, and/or conflicting priorities.
Create goals that address the problems and present solutions for the problems that are making you both unhappy. Dig deep though and make sure you’re really getting to the heart of the problem and not simply scratching the surface. If you don’t solve the actual problem and only address the symptoms your discontent is going to continue and it will all feel like wasted effort.
Create Your Goals Together
This is something that can’t be a one-sided success story. You should each have goals that are individual and that are likely to make you a better spouse but your marriage goals need to be decided as partners in life and not as two individuals who share the same house.
You should also both take the goal setting process seriously if it’s going to work. You have to be committed to setting goals that are going to produce positive results for your marriage. More importantly, you must both commit to seeing these goals through so you can enjoy the benefits of accomplishing them together.
