Are you looking to move out of your parent’s home soon? Maybe you’re a student or you’re just at the age where you just need to leave the nest. Either way, chances are that you’ve never considered the workings of tumble dryers, simply taking the device for granted. Well, here’s a quick guide to selecting and using your own machine…

Do I select a vented or condenser tumble dryer?

As a general rule, vented tumble dryers are fairly inexpensive to buy and to run. These machines are only suitable though if you’re able to put your machine by a window or outside wall. This is because you’ll want the pipe of your machine to direct the extracted water outside of your home. More costly condenser tumble dryers paradoxically, can be placed anywhere in the home. Condenser dryers use a special chamber (which you must remember to empty regularly) that holds the extracted water.

Do I choose a timer or sensor machine?

Timer models are cheaper to buy but the extra cost of a sensor model will see you clothes dried more efficiently and thoroughly and takes the guess work out of choosing a spin duration.

Drying clothes effectively:

Put clothes of similar thickness into tumble dryers at once. For example, do not dry thick towels with thinner garments as the towels would be improperly dried or the thinner items over dried. This can weaken material over time. Remember not to load too many clothes into the devices’ drum. Over filling your machine’s drum will cause over heating which could not only damage clothing but could see it stop working.

The same advice should be taken if using a washer dryer to dry out clothing. Washer dryers – as a 2-in-1 device – offer the benefit of space saving but as a more complicated device, problems are more likely to occur.
