Clark had borrowed our echo chainsaw a month ago. Well, this Saturday I was going to retrieve it one way or another. It’s our chainsaw and we want it Saturday. The trees were unkempt without that chainsaw. Let Clark buy his own.

This is why wars get started, I thought to myself. One person deliberately or unknowingly does something to really annoy the other person. He borrows an item that he knows, or should know, is needed by the person he borrows it from and doesn’t return it. He is the neighbor who is inconsiderate time after time.

As I set the flowers down on the black dining room set, I stood back to admire the good decorating sense I used when I bought it. It looked perfect with the pale green flowered dishes I used. My friends were coming for lunch and I was ready.

Lenore, who was married to the inconsiderate Clark, was going to be one of the guests. If I got a chance, I would bring the topic of chainsaws into the conversation. It might not fit in well with gossip and fashionista talk though.

Back in the kitchen, I added mayonaisse to the chicken salad I had made with macaroni and boiled eggs. Yes, it was cold enough. Martha Stewart couldn’t have done better. I mentally patted myself on the back. The chicken salad would be served with croissants and lemon squares for dessert.

Well, the doorbell was announcing their arrival. Hi I said as I opened the door. Jeana was wearing blue, soft powder blue sweater and long earrings. Ruba had on a pale sage green dress with sandals. Lenore wore jeans and a boyfriend shirt in white cotton. She was always casually dressed.

We chatted and I fixed a drink for each. Then we went into the dining room, I lit the candles and lunch was served. Jeana mentioned that her husband John would be cutting the grass this weekend and there was my opening. I told them Jerry would be cutting down some bushes that were obstructing the windows. I looked at Lenore and casually asked if Clark was finished with our chainsaw.

She said she would bring it over later that day. She told me about the new poulan chainsaw that Clark had purchased. I asked how he liked it and she said he did. We discussed the warranties and how much we had spent on them. We agreed they each got a good deal.
