As children start to get older, you can introduce them to more advanced types of arts and crafts. It’s really a lot of fun, and there are so many unique and enjoyable projects that children can work on. A project that is relatively easy for anyone starting out is a Halloween lawn figurine. You can choose to make this as large or small as you want, depending on how much experience with woodworking you have and how long you want to spend working on it.

This is a great project to start with because it’s simple enough that the kids won’t get frustrated with it, and yet still something that they’d be proud to show off. There are a number of supplies you’ll need including a jig saw, hammer, sandpaper, dust mask to protect your mouth and nose from dust, goggles for the eyes, an artist’s paint brush, carbon paper, wooden stakes, finishing nails, some plywood and some paint. You will have to decide what type of character you want it to be, such as a witch or pumpkin. Though, whatever you decide is fine just as long as it’s scary and relates to Halloween; a witch or pumpkin fits the mold, and a gravestone is also an option.

Set the carbon paper and the pattern over the wood so the children can trace it. Using pencils, they should press hard enough so the carbon paper will make a strong enough impression into the wood so you know exactly where to cut. Next, smooth all the edges down with sandpaper. This is a great job for the kids to do on their own because the sandpaper is rough, but not enough to hurt them. Keep going until the sides are all completely smooth.

Building a wooden bucket for trick or treating is another kid’s woodworking project for them them to work on. This way not only can your kids be proud they made this all on their own, but they actually get to use it and show it off too. While a wooden bucket for collecting candy may seem a bit odd, there are tons of possibilities for what you can do. To make it easier, just take five pieces of wood about the same size and nail them together.

Something this easy provides children with something they can carry around on Halloween and store candy in. Kids really enjoy woodworking projects because it lets them create things that they can treasure for a lifetime. Crafts are enjoyed by many kids, and as they can start using tools by themselves as they get older; this is when they can get that much more creative and act on their ideas. As long as they understand to be careful while working, children can really have a lot of fun with woodworking.
