Keeping your carpet in good condition requires getting the right underlay for it. The underlay is sometimes overlooked because it is not readily seen or directly stepped, on unlike the carpet covering it. Experts say that the better quality of the carpet you purchase, the more you will need a good quality underlay for it.

Choosing the best quality underlay that you can afford is important because it:

* improves underfoot comfort
* absorbs crushing forces on the carpet
* overcomes minor imperfections on the floor
* improves acoustic and thermal insulation properties of the floor

There are three types of underlay to choose from:

Felt: This is usually made from jute waste, textiles, wool, or a combination of these fibers which provide a dense and firm underlay that is now seldom used in carpet installations.

Foam: This underlay can be made of prime polyurethane or bonded polyurethane chips. When choosing foam quality, look for one that is firm, not soft, which will provide good foot stability and carpet protection. This type of underlay is made of recycled materials and is environmentally friendly.

Rubber waffle: Made from natural sponge rubber, this type is one of the more expensive underlays you can find but it provides strength, durability, resilience and firm support for your carpet. Its cellular construction allows air to circulate which minimizes dampness and condensation under the carpet.

Underlay tips

1. As a guide, the right underlay should keep you from feeling the floor with the heel of your shoe.
2. A poorly fitted underlay will lead to stretching and ruin the carpet backing.
3. Underlay should be chosen to suit the location of the carpet and the amount of traffic it will get.
4. Use a new underlay when installing a new carpet to avoid having the same wear patterns that appeared on the old carpet resurface on your new carpet. Carpet warranties also apply only to products installed over new underlay.
5. Try several underlays under your carpet before buying, to get the feel that’s right for you.
6. Carpets with built-in underlays may not be as durable as those that are chosen and bought separately.

Investing in good underlay can extend the life of your carpet, add comfort under feet, and improve the insulation properties of your carpet.. As underlays can come in various grades and qualities like carpets, don’t hesitate to ask the assistance of your supplier when selecting the right one for your needs.
